SAN JOSE, Calif. -- February 5, 1992 -- Novell, Inc., today unveiled the NetWare Management System, providing the foundation for a series of cohesive, modular network management products that combine to give systems administrators centralized control of resources throughout the network computing environment from a single PC. Novell's NetWare Management System provides an open, extensible, object-oriented environment that allows systems administrators to manage the NetWare environment, as well as a wide variety of additional networked devices such as hubs, routers and wide-area network links. The system also lets developers create their own applications using Novell's network management application programming interfaces (APls). These applications, combined with Novell's NetWare Management System, allow network managers to build a complete management solution on a single platform. "Most vendors provide management utilities for their own devices, but a network management standard system for the network computing environment has yet to emerge. Users today are asking for a single, unified platform that can manage the entire network computing environment from a standard PC," said Duane Murray, vice president and general manager of Novell's Network Management Products Division. "With this announcement Novell delivers comprehensive network management and introduces a standards-based interoperability platform that allows users to manage virtually any networked device from within a single integrated system. By simplifying and consolidating network management, Novell is fulfilling its promise to accelerate the growth of the network computing industry." Steve Long, manager of internal suport/data administration at Zimmer, Inc., a division of Bristol-Myers Squibb, plans to use Novell's management system because of its potential to integrate management systems from a variety of vendors. "We anticipate Novell will accomplish in the area of network management what it has done for networks in general," Long said. "Novell put standards out there, broke down the barriers between vendors and got different products to work together to deliver better solutions. We need the same result in network management, and Novell is well-positioned to make this a reality." Novell's NetWare Management System Environment Novell's NetWare Management System supports both OS/2 and Microsoft Windows applications and NetWare Management Agents. The NetWare Management System offers the following key features and benefits: . Open, standardized development and application environment -- Developers can add value to any part of the NetWare Management System in a variety of ways, including instrumenting a server-based application, enhancing the information contained in the NetWare Management Map database, or writing a management application that supports their own devices. Users benefit from a consistent look and feel throughout the NetWare Management System interface, regardless of management application or managed device. ù Application integrator -- lets third-party developers create their own icons, integrate their menuing systems into Novell's network management graphical environment and launch their network management applications from the NetWare Management Map. ù Data server -- provides the means for management applications to share the same protocol stack, interface card and low-level software, letting users employ a single network interface card and single set of management protocols to manage their network computing environment. ù Alarm manager -- allows reception and communication of alarms caused by network events to be passed between Novell and third-party management applications, so network events from a variety of agents can be viewed in a consistent manner. . Integrated database -- Novell's Btrieve database engine allows developers to use standard database tools and interfaces to link their applications with Novell's NetWare Management system. Users get a single, consistent view of network data, regardless of the source of the information. Technology Licensing and Software Development Kits Novell's network management core technology is the foundation for Novell's NetWare Management System and allows products from Novell, such as NetWare Services Manager, LANterm Services Manager, Communications Services Manager, and Hub Services Manager to be integrated into the NetWare Management System. The software development kits (SDKs) are the primary building blocks that let third-party developers integrate their technologies into the NetWare Management System. Developers can license Novell's network management SDKs for US$4995. NSM includes NetWare Management Maps for both environments which display icons representing all devices on NetWare networks. NetWare Services Manager (NSM) applications run on MS-Windows or OS/2-Presentation Manager workstations and are launched via Novell's NetWare Management Map. These products deliver cohesive NetWare management, providing systems administrators with a comprehensive overview of their NetWare environment. "With NetWare Services Manager, Novell assumes full responsibility for managing the complete set of NetWare services -- Those products that we deliver to customers," said John Edwards, vice president of marketing for Novell's NetWare Products Division. "We've focused on making our management system intuitive and easy-to-use, while giving it the power required to manage a global NetWare environment." "We're excited about Novell's NetWare Services Manager," said Mike Williams, manager of networks and telecommunications for the San Francisco-based law firm of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison. "It's exactly what we've been looking for. The performance looks good, the user interface is intuitive and the product seems very flexible. Not only is it the one solution for all our network management needs, it's extremely cost-effective." Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison's network spans five branch offices and includes approximately 1200 nodes, primarily PC/AT-class workstations, interacting with NetWare running on NetFRAME servers. NetWare Management Map Key Features and Benefits Novell's NetWare Management Map (NMM) automates resource management, reduces network downtime and optimizes network performance. It automatically discovers NetWare devices, maps them and continuously monitors them in realtime. NMM stores and continually updates all network information in a central record manager, using Novell's Btrieve database engine. Key features include: ù Auto-discovery -- NMM eliminate s manual inventory by automatically discovering and logically mapping all devices on a NetWare network, quickly and completely. As an example, NSM recently discovered and mapped Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison's 1200-node network in about one-half hour, a task that could have taken days without auto-discovery. ù Global network view -- Combined with NMM's automated mapping capability, users can easily manage and maintain NetWare devices, regardless of their location. This allows network managers located at an organization's headquarters to control and monitor remote resources, leveraging centralized expertise while saving time and travel expenses. ù Graphical user interface -- In other Windows or Presentation Manager environments, NMM provides a standardized, easy-to-use navigational system that remains consistent for all devices on the network. Management applications, including NSM, are launched via NMM by simply selecting and double-clicking on c he appropriate icon on the map. ù On-line help -- provides an overview of procedures and policies for managing the network, as well as providing information on specific network events and suggested problem resolution. ù Continuous network monitoring -- NMM and associated applications can run in the background, freeing up the computer for other tasks while the applications compile network statistics and log network events and errors. NetWare Services Manager Key Features and Benefits The NetWare Services Manager applications allow comprehensive NetWare control and monitoring of NetWare servers and workstations. Key features include: ù Server and workstation schematics -- provides an overview of the services and hardware resident on the server and its configuration. For example, double-clicking on a NetWare server icon opens a window which displays graphical views of available RAM, disk utilization, and what types of network interface cards are in stalled in the server. ù User-defined alert thresholds -- users can set their own thresholds for a variety of parameters relating to server performance and configuration, such as the number of open files on the server and client/server transactions. When these thresholds are exceeded, alarms are automatically generated and appear on the map. ù Printer and printer queue configuration and status -- NSM automatically locates NetWare printers and their print queues and displays associated information, such as active jobs in the print queue. ù NLM monitor -- automatically displays a list of NLMs actively running on the server and associated memory utilization, names, versions numbers, and copyright information. ù Automatic server fault and alert notification -- the entire NetWare environment can be monitored at once. Network managers can quickly isolate network problems, whatever the source, and quickly and efficiently respond to preempt further network disruption. Pricing and Availability NetWare Services Manager for either OS/2 or Windows will be available through Novell's distribution channels in April 1992 for the suggested list price of US$4995. The NetWare Management Map is included with N SM at no extra charge. The NetWare Management Map for OS/2 is also included with NetWare Services for OS/2, which was introduced in December 1991. One NetWare Management Agent, software that resides in the NetWare server and reports network statistics and events to the network management applications, is included with each NSM product. NetWare Management Agents (one is needed per NetWare 3.x server) will also be available in April (please see the accompanying news release). Pricing applies in the United States and Canada only. NetWare SQL provides flexible access to data created by applications built on Btrieve, Novell's industry standard record manager. It also features expanded desktop support to include Macintosh personal computers through Apple Computer's Data Access Language (DAL) as well as the capability of sharing Btrieve-based information with major popular front-end applications. "Database services are a core technology for business applications and network computing," said Jim Bills, executive vice president for Novell. "Btrieve is the underlying record manager for NetWare and for hundreds of commercial and internally developed applications. NetWare SQL provides the integration platform for sharing Btrieve-based data from DOS, OS/2, Windows, and Macintosh computers and represents Novell's commitment to enhancing its database technology to meet our customers' demands." "Immediate access to key corporate information is what today's business managers need. Novell's support for Apple's Data Access Language (DAL) in this new release of NetWare SQL provides Macintosh users with the ability to exchange information across the company and integrate it with familiar personal computer applications," said Jim Groff, director of marketing for Apple Computer's Enterprise Systems Division. Larry Winn, Applications Development Manager at Georgia Power, is looking at using NetWare SQL v3.0 to integrate different desktop platforms. "Our executives want a project management system that is accessible from both Macintosh and Windows workstations. The other solutions we've looked at required either purchasing software or protocol drivers for some or all of the workstations involved. What we really want is a client-server based solution that contains all the components we need. We are excited about the possibilities of this new technology." NetWare SQL v3.0 continues Novell's leadership in the data management marketplace. In August, 1990 NetWare SQL became the first SQL NetWare Loadable Module (NLMIM) to ship for the NetWare 3.x platform. Btrieve, first released in 1982, is included as a core component of the NetWare operating system and provides unique record management functions for many of Novell's products, including NetWare for SAA and the newly announced NetWare Management System. New in NetWare SQL v3.0 NetWare SQL v3.0 is the only relational system that provides direct access to Btrieve-based data created with major business applications, including accounting systems such as Great Plains, Macola, and Platinum; project management systems like Primavera and Prestige; and sales management systems like Market Force, Telemagic, and Maximizer. NetWare SQL v3.0 allows multiple users to share this Btrieve-based information with popular front-end applications, including spreadsheets like Excel and Lotus 1-2-3; query tools and report writers, such as Forest & Trees, R & R Report Writer and LightShip; and development tools, including Advanced Revelations and Clipper. NetWare SQL v3.0 is the first PC based relational database engine to offer support for Macintosh computers through Apple's DAL interface. By expanding client support to include the Macintosh platform, Netware SQL v3.0 allows users to share a common Btrieve database with popular DAL compliant applications, including spreadsheets like Excel and Lotus 1-2-3, query tools like ClearAccess, Data Prism, and GQL; and application development tools like 4th Dimension and HyperCard. NetWare SQL v3.0 offers enhanced features for more flexible data management, including declarative Referential Integrity which allows database administrators to apply data restrictions at the database level. This implementation is consistent with IBM's DB2 implementation and frees the developer from having to include Referential Integrity procedures at the application level. Referential Integrity restrictions are enforced by Btrieve. Users benefit from the additional option to configure Btrieve-based applications to adhere to these restrictions. NetWare SQL v3.0 also provides users with faster, easier access to Btrieve-based data. Users can now continue to access data anytime during the backup process and can use NetWare's system backup utilities or third-party backup products. Multiple users gain better access to information simultaneously through page-level locking during transactions. Records are rapidly pulled from enhanced caching routines (memory buffering), instead of having to be loaded from disk. And NetWare SQL v3.0 also features named database support which provides transparent access to data located on multiple servers without requiring users to know the path name or server location. Pricing, Availability and Ordering Information NetWare SQL will be available in March, 1992, from Novell authorized resellers for US$795 for the 5-user version; US$1,295 for the 10-user version; US$2,195 for the 20-user version; $US3,995 for the 50-user version; US$5,995 for the 10-user version; and US$10,995 for the 250-user version.
